What is diagnosis ?

Diagnosis aim at monitoring the potential existence of failures in systems, identify these failures and their "amplitude". Therefore, Diagnosis involves the threee following aspects:

  • Detection: Declare that "some" failures affect the system
  • Localisation: Say precisely which failure is present
  • Estimation: Measure the amplitude of the failure when appropriate

Very often, failures arise "inside" the system and are not accessible to measurements. Consequently, Diagnosis must use the only available measurements in ordre to detect and localize the failures.


What is DiagSign ?

Whatever diagnosis design method is used, it is crucial to have a measurement database that is sufficiently relevant and representative of situations that have to be distinguished.

There are two ways to produce data for diagnosis design:

  • Experimental: These data are collected after failures occur in operational conditions or under intentionally introduced failures on testbeds.
  • Mathematical Model: These data are obtained by simulation using mathematical model that need to be quite faithful even in failure conditions.

One such data set is obtained, the challenge is to define a way to exploit it in order to derive a diagnosis algorithm. This is what DiagSign does.

The design mode

The design mode enables a set of discriminating graphical signatures to be generated. This is a set of 2D signatures having geometrical properties that change in a different way according to the active set of faults.

The Validation Mode

The validation mode enables to check the effective ability of the set of signatures obtained during the design mode to achieve the classification task.
